Even Total Assimilation Is Not Enough
Many, many years ago -- when the popular bands were The Rolling Stones and the like and the Beatles had only been John, Paul, George and Ringo separately for a short while -- this country entered into a very tense period regarding relations between the races. Most other cultures were able to bring at least some of their native culture along with them when they immigrated -- their native name, their native language, the food, dances, clothing -- you get the idea. One glaring exception was the slaves from Africa -- these, unfortunate people were not allowed to keep any of the things they were familiar with. New names, language, religion, everything . And trying to keep any part of your, now, former life alive was dealt with harshly. And, of course, slaves couldn't read -- or write -- most of them.
